Growing up a sports and music enthusiast, it was easy to plan yearly trips with my friends to cheer on our favourite teams or artists. Now with a family in tow, it is important to keep in mind that your vacation destination does not need to only be exclusive to your children’s interests.
No matter your travel needs, many cities in Canada and the United States offer a great combination to suit everyone’s wants.
In researching a vacation destination, put in the homework to see which of the following items are available and at what time of year:
Sports – NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, Nascar, MLS, College, etc.
Public Golf Courses
Spas & General Relaxation
Hiking & Sightseeing
Swimming, Water & Amusement Parks
Another great tip is to see if you have any family that would want to travel with you or if you have any relatives in the area. The benefits are endless.
Traveling with family can mean cheaper accommodation options through short-term rentals (i.e. Airbnb) and with family or visiting relative’s means accessibility to babysitting options. This will enable a date night or getaway option that are you and your spouse’s interests.
Below please find 7 terrific family destinations that may peak your interest for various reasons.
1. Summer Fun in Wisconsin!
If you do not know about Wisconsin Dells, then you are missing out! They have an unbelievable amount of theme parks and entertainment centers that will keep your kids excited and occupied for days. But that is not all that is available in the area.
If baseball is your sport of preference, roughly two hours away is Miller Park to take in a Brewers game.
2. Summer Relaxation in San Antonio
If enjoying the sun at a bit of a slower pace is more your style. Then look no further than the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio.
The amenities located right on site are amazing and have more than enough to keep the family smiling for your entire vacation.
For the sports fan, the Spurs are only a 20 minute drive away. And if you are in town over a Sunday, Houston is roughly 3 hours away to take in a Texan game.
3. Warm Up Winter in California
I do not believe there is any State that offers as much in such a close proximity than California.
With parks consisting of Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Legoland, Universal Studios, SeaWorld San Diego, San Diego Zoo, Six Flags, etc….there is fun to be had for weeks.
Add to that the gorgeous Pebble Beach Golf Links and endless professional sports teams playing all year round, there is definitely something for everyone in California.
4. Don’t Count Out Florida
As much as California has to offer in terms of amusement and water parks, Florida may be on par. Disney World, Universal Studios, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove, Fun Spot America, etc….there is zero chance to wake up and not have a new adventure planned.
Similarly, there are professional sports of all types available plus if you book correctly, taking in the DAYTONA 500 is an option in February.
5. SIN CITY No More
Las Vegas has evolved to a destination that provides attractions to people of all ages.
With amazing golf courses (Shadow Creek), the Golden Knights and soon an NFL team, sports fans will have many options.
Not to mention the terrific shows for all ages.
6. Desert Getaway in Phoenix
If baseball excites you, then taking in the action of the Cactus League is perfect. Easily align some preseason baseball, a Cardinal and Coyote game and you have a sports fans dream.
Daily family hikes and travel destinations are easily in reach. A short 3.5 hour drive to the Grand Canyon would excite any young adventurer.
There are mountains and views to suit everyone’s abilities and endless choices for golf courses.
7. Winter Ski in Colorado
The town of Breckenridge has a ski resort second to none, offering World-class skiing. Chose from year round activities but my choice would be during Winter & Spring when you can plan some alpine skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, fat bike tours, etc.
Add in the location is only 90 minutes from Denver and all its sporting events and amenities, it is a terrific location destination.
In addition to all these regular events in each city or state, be sure to also check for festivals or concert tours. As previously discussed, please see here for the benefits of sharing musical interests within your family: Benefits of Listening to Music
In my past, I have utilized the Consequence of Sound website as an excellent resource. Their festival outlook page is a terrific one-stop shop for who is where and the various festival lineups.
Obviously there are many wonderful locations that offer many choices to each member of your family. Having fun, traveling together and bonding is the ultimate goal. But ensuring that everyone has personal enjoyment for some of the activities is a need.
